STL: Intraoral scans

Intraoral scanners capture the dentition and soft tissue in high resolution for digital use. CBCTHub opens the STL/PLY these devices export regardless of brand.

Compatible scanners

Every intraoral scanner on the market exports STL or OBJ. CBCTHub accepts:

  • iTero (Element 2/5D/Plus, Flex) — STL/PLY
  • 3Shape TRIOS (3, 4, 5) — STL/PLY
  • Medit i500/i600/i700 — STL/PLY
  • Carestream CS 3700/3800 — STL
  • Planmeca Emerald S — STL/PLY
  • Dentsply Sirona Primescan — STL
  • Shining3D Aoralscan — STL/PLY
NotaIf your scanner exports in proprietary format (.dcm from older iTero, .dms from TRIOS), use the STL export option in the manufacturer's software before uploading to CBCTHub.

Clinical use cases

  • Implantology: pre-surgical scan + CBCT to design the guide.
  • Fixed prosthetics: digital impression for crowns, bridges, veneers.
  • Orthodontics: digital models instead of plaster for aligners.
  • Splints: digital design for bruxism or TMJ.
  • Progress tracking: upload scans at different dates to show the patient treatment progression.

Upload an intraoral scan

    From the scanner software, export the case as STL (maxilla and mandible as separate files, or one file with both).

    In My exams on CBCTHub, click Upload exam. Select the STL.

    Fill in patient data as with a CBCT. If the patient already has a CBCT exam in your account, you can manually link them to see them together.

    CBCTHub detects automatically that it is a mesh and opens the 3D model viewer instead of the DICOM one.
CasoWorkflow: scan + CBCT for implant

1. Acquire the patient's CBCT.

2. Scan with the intraoral scanner the area to treat.

3. Upload both files to CBCTHub under the same patient.

4. Share both links with the lab that will design the guide. They download, use their design software (BlueSkyBio, exocad), and return the final guide STL.

5. Upload the guide to CBCTHub too, leaving the whole case documented in one place.
