2D Radiographs: panoramic, peri, ceph

In addition to volumetric CBCTs, CBCTHub opens 2D radiographs in DICOM format. These are the traditional images used before CBCT and still relevant for many diagnoses.

Supported 2D radiograph types

  • 2D Panoramic: the classic full-arch view. Different from the reconstructed panoramic of CBCT (this is a direct shot from the panoramic machine).
  • Periapical: the small intraoral shot of 1-3 teeth, useful for endodontic and periodontal diagnosis.
  • Bitewing: crown shot for interproximal caries diagnosis.
  • Lateral cephalometric: used in orthodontics for Steiner, Ricketts analysis, etc.
  • Occlusal: shot from the occlusal plane.

How they look in CBCTHub

When opening a 2D radiograph, CBCTHub uses a different viewer from the volumetric CBCT: the RadiographViewer. It has:

  • Single view (no volume, no slices to scroll through).
  • Zoom and pan.
  • Brightness/contrast adjustment (W/L as in CBCT).
  • Measurements in mm if the DICOM carries calibration info.
  • Annotations: arrows, circles, notes.
  • Color inversion (positive/negative) for analysis.
NotaCBCTHub automatically detects whether you uploaded a volumetric CBCT or a 2D radiograph and opens the appropriate viewer. No need to indicate it manually.

Upload a 2D radiograph

  1. 1
Export the file from the digital sensor (Owandy, Carestream, Sirona, Sopro, etc.) or from the panoramic machine.
  2. 2
Make sure the format is DICOM (.dcm). Some sensors export to TIFF or PNG by default — if so, use the export to DICOM option in the software.
  3. 3
Upload it to CBCTHub like a CBCT — the system identifies it automatically.
  4. 4
Fill in the patient data. If the sensor writes the name in the DICOM, it auto-completes.
ImportantePNG/JPG/TIFF are not DICOM. CBCTHub only opens radiographs exported as DICOM. If your sensor exports to JPG by default, look for the DICOM option in its software or convert it with a DICOM viewer like RadiAnt or OsiriX.

Use cases

  • Endodontics: pre and post-treatment periapicals to show the patient and specialist.
  • Periodontics: complete periapical series of the mouth, digitally documented.
  • Orthodontics: lateral cephalometric + panoramic for the initial study.
  • Emergency diagnosis: quick periapical sent to the specialist colleague by link.
