STL: Digital orthodontics
Digital orthodontics replaces plaster models with scanned STL files. CBCTHub lets you store these models and share them with your orthodontist or aligner lab.
Orthodontic use cases
- Initial diagnosis: digital model replaces the pre-treatment plaster set.
- Virtual setup: simulation of planned movements (designed by the aligner lab).
- Clear aligners: each aligner is printed/thermoformed from its own STL.
- Retainers: digital design and fabrication post-treatment.
- Progress tracking: intermediate scan compared against initial to evaluate progression.
Upload an orthodontic case
- 1Initial intraoral scan (maxilla + mandible + bite in occlusion). Usually 3 STL files.
- 2Upload the three to CBCTHub under the same patient. Rename them to identify: “Initial maxilla”, “Initial mandible”, “Initial occlusion”.
- 3When you receive from the lab the virtual setup or the per-aligner files, upload them too. Label by number (“Aligner 1 maxilla”, etc.).
- 4Share the patient portal with the orthodontist who is treating the case — from a single link they have access to all the files.
TipIf you work with long cases (24+ aligners per case), consider naming files with leading zeros: “Aligner 01”, “Aligner 02”... so they sort alphabetically in the list.
What CBCTHub does NOT do
Things outside the scope of the viewer:
- Does not design aligners or plan setups (that's Invisalign, ClearCorrect, proprietary software).
- Does not simulate movements automatically (it is only static visualization of the STL).
- Does not print or thermoform — you need separate physical equipment.
- Does not export to CAD/CAM milling formats (files remain STL).
What CBCTHub does do is be the digital repository of the case files, accessible from any device, with simple sharing by link.
