3D Model viewer (STL/PLY)

In addition to DICOM, CBCTHub supports 3D models in STL and PLY formats. These are the typical files from:

  • Intraoral scanners (iTero, TRIOS, Medit, Carestream).
  • 3D printed models (splints, surgical guides, aligners).
  • CAD/CAM dental designs (prosthetics, crowns, bridges).
  • Models generated from other software using the CBCT itself.

Upload a 3D model

    In My exams, click Upload exam as with a regular DICOM.

    Select the .stl or .ply file. CBCTHub detects automatically that it is a 3D model and prepares the corresponding viewer.

    Fill in the patient data as with any exam.

The MeshViewer

When opening an STL/PLY, the MeshViewer loads — a dedicated viewer different from the DICOM one, optimized for surface models.

Available tools:

  • Rotate / pan / zoom with mouse or touch.
  • Preset views: occlusal, frontal, right/left lateral.
  • Model color: white, ivory, clinical color or adjustable transparency.
  • Background: Hub black (with lime glow), white or gray.
  • Measurements directly on the surface (in real mm).
  • Annotations anchored to points on the model.
NotaThe sidebar has visible tooltips on every button so you don't have to guess what each one does. The header shows your clinic logo and patient name.

Share a 3D model

Works the same as with DICOM: each model has its unique link, can be shared by email, embed or the center's public page. The referrer opens the link and sees the model in the MeshViewer with no install.

CasoSplint design before surgery

1. Upload the patient's intraoral scan (STL from iTero/TRIOS).

2. Upload their CBCT as a separate exam.

3. Share both links with the lab to design the guide.

4. When the lab returns the designed guide (final STL), upload it too — it stays associated with the patient.
