CBCT Pricing Benchmark 2026: How to Position Your Center Without a Price War

CBCTHub·July 15, 2026

The Dental CBCT Market in 2026

The dental imaging market in English-speaking countries has grown at double-digit rates since 2022, driven by implant dentistry, digital orthodontics, and guided surgery. But supply expanded too: mid-sized metro areas that had one CBCT-equipped center five years ago now have three to six. Price pressure is real, and more centers keep falling into the trap of competing on discounts.

Reference Price Ranges (Dental CBCT, Small-to-Medium FOV)

The following ranges are reference points for the private, urban, self-pay/uninsured market:

  • United States: $150 to $400 USD.
  • United Kingdom: £110 to £280 GBP.
  • Canada: CAD $180 to CAD $420.
  • Australia: AUD $190 to AUD $450.

Large maxillofacial FOV scans typically cost 40% to 80% more. These figures are for the raw study. Add a radiology report from a specialist, and the price rises by $30 to $90 USD (or the local equivalent), depending on the market.

Why Cutting Your Price Is Almost Always a Bad Idea

An imaging center has high fixed costs (equipment, rent, staff) and relatively low variable costs per study (electricity, consumables, time). That means your margin on each additional study is high. Cutting price to capture more volume sounds logical, but there are three problems:

  1. Once you cut the price, referring dentists expect that price forever. Raising it later is very hard.
  2. You attract low-quality referrers (the ones who only look at price), who are the first to leave when a competitor runs a promotion.
  3. You brand yourself as "the cheap center" — the exact opposite of what a specialist wants to recommend to their patient.

Differentiation by Service: the Healthier Path

Instead of competing on price, compete on referral experience. Dentists value what makes their job easier more than what saves the patient money:

  • Fast delivery: if you deliver in under 30 minutes versus a competitor's 24 hours, you can charge 20% more without objection.
  • A quality viewer: letting the dentist review the case on their phone in the same operatory where the patient is sitting changes the clinical conversation.
  • An optional radiology report: offer a "CBCT + specialist report in 24 hours" bundle at a combined price.
  • Referring-dentist support: someone at the center answers technical questions about the study.

Bundle Models That Work

Three proven bundles:

  1. CBCT + basic report: a tiered-price combo. Increases margin and positioning.
  2. Orthodontic pack: CBCT + cephalometric + panoramic at a 10-15% discount versus buying individually. Attracts orthodontists who need all three.
  3. Implant pack: CBCT + viewer with planning tools + optional STL export if you have an intraoral scanner. This is what modern implant dentists expect.

When Cutting Price Actually Makes Sense

Only in two situations:

  • High-volume group practice agreements, where the discount is justified by a guaranteed minimum monthly referral volume.
  • First-time acquisition of a new referring dentist: a one-time discount on the first study so they try your service. It's not a pricing strategy, it's an acquisition cost.

How to Raise Prices Without Losing Referring Dentists

If you're going to raise prices, do it once a year, in January, alongside a visible service improvement (new delivery platform, new software, faster turnaround). The increase gets associated with added value, not greed. Give your top referring dentists 30 days' notice with a personal message from the owner, not a mass email.

Price Is Just One Lever

The most common mistake in imaging centers is thinking price is the main lever. In reality it's the fourth or fifth, after quality, delivery time, digital experience, and service. Optimize those first.

If you want to upgrade the digital experience without building your own software, you can try CBCTHub free and give your referring dentists a modern viewer starting with your next study.

Why Dentists Choose One Imaging Center Over Another (and What CDs Have to Do With It)

Three factors decide the referral: image quality confidence, delivery time, and ease of use. CDs are the most underestimated source of friction in the industry.
